Thank You

October 31st, 2007

I want to extend a sincere thank you to all the readers who have contacted me. Your kind words have truly humbled me and given me the encouragement to continue to do what I love. There are days when I start to doubt myself, and then one of your emails arrive and I’m energized again. Thanks for taking the time to not only read my books, but to send such wonderful emails and posts.

Several of you have asked about the release of Arms of a Stranger. Due to distribution problems its release has been delayed. Check the site for news of a new release date. And yes it’s an INTERRACIAL ROMANCE.

Blessings to you all and thanks for the continued support.

OVERWHELMED

March 23rd, 2007

Let me begin by saying that I’m overwhelmed by the response to The Politics of Love. I knew that I enjoyed writing Eden and Chase’s story, but never in my wildest imagination could I have imagined the wonderful reception. Thank you all for the kind words. You placed a big smile on my face. As a writer there is nothing better than to receive praise from a reader. It encourages us to keep dreaming and writing.

Speaking of writing, I’ve competed revisions on my next release Arms of a Stranger, and I’m well into Taylor and Stone’s story. I must tell you that I’m feeling the pressure to live up to The Politics of Love. I hope that I don’t disappoint you. Thanks again. Well I have to run, Taylor and Stone are in the act of a passionate encounter, and are demanding my attention.

Frustrated

January 26th, 2007

I have a new book, The Politics of Love, that was scheduled for release January 15th by Amazon and January 28th by Barnes and Noble. Both release dates have changed several times on each site. I’ve read it will be available in 2 to 3 days, available through other sellers, currently unavailable, only to return to available through other sellers. The local bookstore is being told that it hasn’t been released by the publisher’s distributor. With that information I contacted my publisher who has assured me that both sellers are in possession of their books, and orders were mailed to bookstores. Sounds good, but unfortunately, no one has seen proof of this, as fans continue to email about the delay. So in my frustration I send this question to the universe. Where the hell is my book?

HAPPY NEW YEAR

January 1st, 2007

The new year is here and I’ve made the first step to fulfilling my New Year’s resolution. A real office has been established with all my writing paraphernalia. The walls have been painted a cheerful, creative inspiring yellow. Bookcases added to hold my reference materials. A scheduled writing time has been established, and warnings issued to all who may violate it. I’m feeling positive about 2007 and can’t wait to see what romantic stories I dream up.

The Politics of Love is being released this month, so I wait with anticipation to see what readers will think. I’m trying to develop that tough skin all writers should possess, but I’m human and want everyone to love what I write as much as I do. Oh well the cover is beautiful. The hero and heroine actually resemble the characters I created. Did I mention the guy on the cover is gorgeous?

Speaking of guys, my wonderful husband is due home in ninety-four days. Can you tell that I’m excited? Well, my new writing schedule calls, and I’ve promised to adhere to the allotted time, so I’m off.

JUGGLING ACT

December 17th, 2006

With my husband out of the country, a super busy, popular teenage daughter, an office that is now short one person, not to mention a demanding Yorkie, when do I find time to write? I’m currently in the process of writing the sequel to The Politics of Love, scheduled for release January 2007. It will be Taylor and Stone’s story with many of the same characters from the first. I like where I’m headed and believe the readers will fall in love with these two characters, but when, oh when can I find time to write?

I’m up in the morning at five and back home by six after an hour at the gym, a must for health reasons. Dinner and talking with my daughter, chasing the dog, a few telephone calls from family, it’s now approaching eight o’clock. I pull out the laptop to review what I have. Type a few lines from the scribbled notes that I managed during the day, then yawn with exhaustion and lose interest. I check my emails and read a few blogs. I type a few pages more before calling it a night. Now the weekends seem like the ideal time to write, but wait, there’s laundry, grocery shopping, hair appointments, errands to run, drop my daughter at her friend’s house, clean while she’s out of the house, more phone calls from family and friends. Oh, yeah, then write a page or two, before going to pick the kid up.

Well things are about to change as we approach a new year. She’ll be getting her license and her father’s car. There will be Me Time established that will carry repercussions for violating. I will take myself and my writing more seriously and see new works created in the coming year. But as for right now, I’ve got to run take care of one of those things that get in the way of my writing.

Disappointed

December 3rd, 2006

The other day I was very disappointed in someone that I’ve known for several years now. We’ve discussed my writing on several occasions, always with encouragement. She has sold my books in her small bookstore, and recommended me to her customers and other small bookstore owners. So when I visited her a few months back, she asked about my next book. She told me to bring some of my promotional items by the store, so that she could advertise my upcoming release. Well I did that.

She greeted me warm and friendly as always. When she spotted the promotional material in my arms, she was excited. She reached for the poster telling me that it was going on the wall behind the counter. While she did that, I browsed the store, and then I heard, “Is he white?” I stood there for a moment processing the tone. I answered that he was. She looked stunned. Then she wanted to know whose idea it was for me to write an interracial romance, mine or the publisher. I answered both. Her next question stunned me. She asked if it was difficult for me to write an interracial love story. I politely responded no, because in all honesty I was completely speechless. What she said next had me shaking my head. She proceeded to tell me that she loved paranormal romances (shape shifters, vampires, and werewolves), aliens from other planets, and anything with a tail. But her face and her words said something else to me. I heard anything but a love story between an African American woman and a white man.

So I ask myself. How do I get past this? Do I say something to her or let it go?

Segregation on the Bookshelves

November 22nd, 2006

Much has been said about the placement of books by African American writers in the bookstores, and I like a large segment of writers am against segregation of our books. As an avid reader, I love books and choose authors based on their talents, not the color of their skin. For years African Americans who loved the romance genre had no choice but to read white authors. The fact that the author was white didn’t take away from the enjoyment of the book. What it did, however, was to make me long to read and see books that represented the rest of America. By this I mean the America that I know, not the negative images that are splashed across the television screen on the evening news. I wanted to see educated, law abiding, loving couples of all races in print and on the same shelves. Just as we have been introduced to white authors in the romance, mystery, and other sections of the bookstore, we as writers want the same opportunity to be introduced to that same buying market. And for those who say white women won’t read our books, many do and others want to, unfortunately they don’t realize that we’re not in the romance section, but in the African American.

I’m fed up! What about you?
